Jon Corippo, a seventh grade teacher at Coarsegold Elementary School, has been selected as the Rural Teacher of the Year by the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED). Mr. Corippo was nominated for the honor by Sierra Telephone. All OPASTCO telco members are invited to nominate one teacher for the award. As the award recipient's nominating telephone company, Sierra Telephone will be recognized at the 2003 OPASTCO Summer Convention in Grand Traverse, Michigan.

Coarsegold Elementary School will receive a grant of $5,000 for technology upgrades and expansion as a result of Mr. Corippo's selection. The nominees were evaluated on implementation of creative teaching strategies; inspiring students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn; showing active involvement and leadership in professional development and extra-curricular activities; effectively using telecommunication technology as a resource to enrich learning; and playing an active role in the school and community. Each year, FRED recognizes one outstanding educator who represents classroom teachers throughout rural America. "To have one of our teachers recognized as the most outstanding educator in rural America is a tremendous honor," comments Coarsegold Union School District Superintendent Bill McCabe.
