When Sierra Flynn was 11 years old in the fifth grade at Coarsegold Elementary, she got a B in an essay writing class. It proved to be the last B she would receive in grammar school. Earlier this month she and her graduating eighth grade friend, Karen Urrutia-Mickler, walked off with impressive scholastic honors, along with other young pupils named for a variety of scholastic awards.

Sierra Flynn and Sarah Williams won the Superintendent’s Medallion for receiving a 4.0 GPA for all quarters of the seventh and eighth grade.
Sierra and Karen were among 10 eighth graders to win the Principal’s Medallion for maintaining a 4.0 GPA in their final grammar school year. Others were Michael Barnes, Martin Barrett, Riana Christensen, Robin Dailey, Marcus Hudson, Brandon Koellish, Sarah Prince and Sarah Williams.

Both girls won honor cords. Sarah Williams received the Soroptimists citizenship award. Justee Dudley won the Soroptimists outstanding academic growth award. Suzzanne Ordway and Kyle Christensen received American Legion honors.

Vision Academy awards for excellence went to Donovan Kearney (art), Robin Dailey (writing), Daniel Nehf (drama), Alicia Ordahl (music) and Karen Urrutia-Mickler (dance). Karen and Sierra, along with Marcus Hudson, received academic pentathlon awards for year-long competitions against pupils from other schools in math, essay, speech, literature and super quiz.

Sarah Prince and Jimmy Marsh won educational enhancement foundations awards. Sierra Flynn placed first, Suzzanne Ordway was second and Ricky Nasser third in the VFW “My Pledge to America” essay competition.

Karen won Sierra Telephone’s excellence in mathematics. Clay Salisbury was named outstanding male athlete and Ashley Nichols was his female counterpart; both awards were from the Lions Club. Sierra Flynn, student body president, returned to take the student body award.
Karen Urrutia-Mickler and Marcus Hudson received a certificate of special achievement from the Madera CSBA. Coarsegold Kiwanis gave its community service award to Madison Fayne and to Steven Moore, Sam Houston, Liza Schlosser and Yvette Diaz for their recycling work.

Suzzanne Ordway took first place, Robin Dailey second and Brittany Bergan and Karen Urrutia-Mickler tied for third in the Gold Pen essay contest. Tiffany Carey received the Oakhurst Sierra Rotary achievement award.

And, finally, Sierra Flynn received the all-around student award for YLP’s Ladies of the Lake. Sierra will attend University High on the Fresno State campus and hopes to study forensics.

Karen Urrutia-Mickler will go to Yosemite High and, following graduation, hopes to attend a U.C. medical school. She wants to become a trauma doctor. When asked how she became interested in the field of medicine, she replied that she was influenced by “my mom and watching ER.”
