Students prepare for speech pentathlon

20th Annual Speech Pentathlon
Students of Coarsegold Elementary School had the opportunity to meet with members of the Mountain High Talkers Toastmasters last month.

The seventh and eighth grade student teams of Coarsegold Elementary School were preparing for the 20th Annual Speech Pentathlon Competition - sponsored by Madera County of Education - and were given the opportunity to work with real masters in the art of public speaking. Mrs. Sherry Graves contacted the Mountain High Talkers Toastmasters group No. 2302 and they graciously invited the two teams of sixteen students to attend one of their October Monday night meetings which are held at the offices of Sierra Telephone. The week prior to the meeting, Sharon Gaston, Sergeant at Arms, and Mary Elliott, Vice-President of Education, volunteered their time spending two afternoons listening, critiquing, and grooming Coarsegold speech students. Students were warmly welcomed and had the privilege of observing and participating in a meeting that was the epitome of Toastmaster decorum and correctness. They watched the order of business conducted by the officers, listened to prepared-timed speeches, and “table talk.”
